A useful NightShift character feels like a person entering a city, not a finished legend. Start small. Give them room to be shaped by the people, jobs, failures, and events they encounter.
Strong character foundations
- Reason to arrive: Work, family, debt, a fresh start, opportunity, or nowhere else to go.
- Short-term goal: Find a job, save money, get a place to stay, reconnect with someone, or join a field.
- Personality: Calm, impulsive, proud, awkward, friendly, defensive, ambitious, naive, or disciplined.
- Flaws: Short temper, bad money habits, too trusting, stubborn, insecure, or desperate to prove themselves.
What to avoid
- Arriving as the most feared criminal in the state
- Knowing everyone important on day one
- Having no weaknesses, no uncertainty, and no need for anybody else
- Writing a backstory that forces every future scene into one direction
Three simple examples
The new driver: Moved to the city for work, takes taxi or freight jobs, talks too much when nervous, and wants enough money for an apartment.
The aspiring business owner: Works small jobs while learning the city, makes contacts, and eventually wants to run something people rely on.
The future public servant: Tries civilian life first, learns the map and the people, then later applies to EMS, LSPD, DOJ, or Weazel with real context.
Let the city finish the story
Your best long-term material will come from what happens after you spawn in: the boss you meet, the deal that goes wrong, the place you keep returning to, the rival you create, or the community you become part of.
